Registration

We would love you to join and compete for SUAC for season 2024-25! There is a preferred registration option for those wishing to represent SUAC:

Athletics NSW (Open | U20 | U18 | U17) Athlete Membership registration is from the period 1 September 2024 – 31 August 2025 which covers both summer track & field season and winter road & cross country seasons (see fees FAQ below). Registration for new and renewing members is now open.

A second option is Community Membership exists which is primarily designed for those who wish to experience community 3k and 5k track races and non-Championship winter events put on by Athletics NSW throughout the season. Community members pay more per event than Athlete Membership and results do not count for Summer or Winter club points however Community members do benefit from Athletics NSW insurance coverage. Community members can upgrade to Athlete Membership.

We also offer Athletics NSW Technical Official registration for those wishing to try their hand at officiating and Club Volunteer Membership for those wishing to assist athletes and administrators which you can elect to do via here).

You must be registered to compete in Athletics NSW & Athletics Australia sanctioned events and Championship events. Season competition can be found on the Athletics NSW website (there are also reciprocal arrangements with other States). Some events are free to enter, others are pay entry per event.

SUAC is Australia’s first and finest athletics club with huge success at club, national and international level.  We have superb coaches who have spent decades in the sport. We offer free entry to ES Marks track on Monday nights and club strength & conditioning sessions to eligible athletes at Sydney Uni high performance gym. For teams events SUAC covers race entry for NSW State Relays & Club Championships as well as all winter relay races and enters as many teams as there are athletes willing to compete. With the help of the University of Sydney we run our own on campus fun run RUNSYDUNI. You also get to be part of Australia’s first & finest athletics club and have a great time with a great bunch of people.

If you are a University of Sydney student you get to be part of our UniSport Nationals teams and be part of intervarsity history competing for USYD. And we organise lots of trips and run a heap of fantastic social events. So join us! We recommend parents of juniors read all FAQs to ensure SUAC is the right fit for your child as we are a university club. As an athlete member you may be entitled to vote at our Annual General Meeting (subject to the Constitution) which can be found in Member Codes below.

Do I need to be a University of Sydney Student to join SUAC?

Absolutely not, we’re open to all, including all levels and abilities! We especially welcome school leavers to SUAC and make the transition from school or junior athletics to senior athletics.

Is there an age limit?

As a university club, our programs are principally directed at late high school, university age and above and do recommend parents read all FAQs to ensure SUAC is the right club for your child. We offer membership categories from U17 and upwards. If you have a desire to register your child at a younger age due to family or alumni reasons, please contact us via our website.

Does registration include training & coaching?

No, this is entirely separate to registration but we offer sprints, middle distance & distance coaching for runners aged 16 and older committed to 2 or more training sessions per week as well as free entry to ES Marks track on Monday nights. For details see Training

What about strength & conditioning training?

Club sessions exist for all established SUAC registered athletes at the David Mortimer High Performance Gym under the supervision of our strength & conditioning coaches at scheduled session times on Wednesday & Friday mornings, see also training. Further details regarding accessing these sessions is supplied upon registration.

Where can I find the Summer & Winter season calendars?

Okay. There are a few components. NSW competition is run by Athletics NSW and the calendar can be found here for the upcoming seasons. Please note meets get added from time to time which are communicated by email and social media. Athletics Australia run National Track & Field Championships and the Track Classics which can be found here. UniSport Australia run Nationals Division 1 Athletics and Distance Running Championships – see FAQs below for details. In addition we run our own Christimas Eve Mile and Sprint handicap events as well as RUNSYDUNI in semester 2 on campus (see below FAQ).

Do I have to be good?

Absolutely not! Athletics is for everyone and meets accommodate all levels and abilities. Sprint, middle distance and distance races are graded by seed time and often field events are split into 2 groups with different starting heights or boards.  The best way to improve is of course to train and compete!

I only do fun runs, should I register?

Yes you absolutely should! If you’re not keen on running on the track at all, the RunNSW Athletics NSW Winter Series registration provides discounted entry to Athletics NSW winter and RunNSW series events and enables you to earn points for SUAC in the Winter Premiership as well as testing yourself against the rest of NSW across all age groups. There are of course 3000m, 5000m and 10000m track events where you can improve your road PB considerably.

What is RUNSYDUNI?

RUNSYDUNI 2024 is our on-campus FREE 4km fun run held in semester 2 on Friday 20 September and includes FREE training sessions in the lead up commencing week 1 of semester 2 for beginners. No, there is only one Athletics NSW Athlete Membership which includes Summer & Winter seasons as registration is for the period from 1 October to 31 August (see fee FAQ below). The Community membership also exists for those who do not wish to compete in Championship or Club events.

Can I transfer from another club to SUAC?

Yes, if you are financially registered in the current season with a club other than SUAC, you can transfer in. Request your club’s Registrar commence the transfer process or send us a message via the Contacts session. Please note if you aren’t registered with a club in the current season, you can register directly with SUAC.

Can I be a member of SUAC and another club?

SUAC has opted out of the Athletics NSW multi-club policy and does not accept multi-club members. We are a university club with specific programs for university aged athletes or soon to reach university age and above. We also have a proud history dating back to 1878. If you are registered with another club and wish to transfer, see FAQ above.

I can't compete at the moment, can I volunteer?

Yes, yes, yes! We are always on the look out for volunteers! If you would like to contribute to our social media activities, events we run such as RUNSYDUNI, as a volunteer official at a summer or winter meet or for meet day medical or administration assistance, we would love to hear from you. Further details here

Does Sydney University have its own track?

Sadly no despite the University being around since 1850 however we organise the on-campus fun run event RUNSYDUNI, a 4km fun run and pre-event training sessions around campus. The closest public track is ES Marks Athletics Track (Anzac Parade, Moore Park) operated by Centennial Parklands Trust. All SUAC athletes have exclusive access of this track between 6:30pm – 7:30pm on Monday’s with our coaches.

Why do the men wear all white & what’s with the tie?

SUAC was founded in 1878, that’s over 140 years of club uniform which has featured proudly around the world including Diamond League meets by Nick Hough, James Nipperess, Jenny Blundell & Nicola McDermott and made a memorable appearance at the World Beer Mile Championships by World Championships representative Jack Colreavy.

How do I apply for an Elite Athlete Program scholarship?

Sydney Uni Sport administers all aspects of the scholarship program (Elite Athlete Program) including candidate acceptance, see susf.com.au/scholarships and carefully read all information and prospectus, especially closing dates for applications. We are unable to provide specific guidance on what athletic results may in any particular scholarship year achieve awarding of a scholarship given this depends on the number and strength of each scholarship year as well as the number of athletes remaining on scholarship. The full list of yearly scholarship recipients can be found within the Sydney Uni Sport annual report which can be found here

How do I earn a University of Sydney Blue?

Sydney University Athletics Club has a proud history of student athletes being awarded University of Sydney Blues and Golds and proudly wearing the award jackets. The awards criteria can be found here.

What ages are Open and Junior Athletes?

Athletics NSW age groups can be found here

What do I need to know about U17, U18 and U20 memberships and SUAC?

Please read the FAQs above as several are also relevant to juniors. Being a university-based club founded in 1878 means we do not have a current affiliation with Little Athletics clubs, nor do we have a  junior program like we do UniSport Nationals or our scholarship programs or our Target Paris program. Overwhelmingly our athletes are of senior high school, university age and beyond. There is no track on campus at the University for athletes to train or compete on and our coaches have a minimum age of 16. Strength & conditioning sessions are available to athletes of university age and above only.  SUAC currently does not run its own meets but U20 athletes have in the past competed at NSW Relay Championships in events where relay teams can be filled in the event and age group where numbers allow. If you desire to register your child below U16 age group due to club or family reasons, please contact us via our website.

What are 2024-2025 registration fees?

2024-2025 Athlete fees for NSW Athlete Membership are Open $240, U16 to U20 $190.  Community membership is $50 but only provides access to non-championship, community-oriented (Bronze tier) races put on by ANSW (it does include insurance). Fees are expected to be reduced from May 2025 to season end on 31 July 2025. A Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness annual membership is required as well.  As a not for profit club, fees go to the cost of running the club and supporting our athletes. Please select carefully and read Athletics NSW terms when registering carefully as no refunds are available from Athletics NSW or SUAC.

Can I use an Active Kids voucher?

No. We are unable to accommodate Active Kids vouchers.

I’ve got it, now how do I register?
